Dividing Fractions and Mixed Numbers

The steps involved in dividing fractions and mixed numbers are similar, but an important step is required when dividing mixed numbers.

Dividing fractions

To divide fractions, invert (turn upside down) the second fraction (the one “divided by”) and multiply. Then reduce, if necessary.

Example 1: Divide

Example 2: Divide ⅓ ÷ 6.

6 =6/1, so the problem can be written ⅓ ÷6/1. Then invert the second fraction and multiply.

In Example 2, 6 and1/6 are reciprocals, so you can see that dividing is the same as multiplying by the reciprocal.

Example 3: Divide3/7 ÷3/14.

Dividing complex fractions

Sometimes, a division of fractions problem may appear in the following form. These are called complex fractions.

The line separating the two fractions means “divided by.” Therefore, this problem may be rewritten as

Now follow the same procedure as shown in Example 2.

Example 4: Divide
